Stephen’s Courage

Lesson 5 of 6 August 7, 2023

The teacher opened the class by introducing Stephen, one of the seven appointed deacons described as "full of faith and full of the Holy Spirit" (Acts 6). He traced Stephen’s bold proclamation before the Sanhedrin in Acts 7, noting how Stephen saw Jesus standing at the right hand of God even as the crowd prepared to stone him. By comparing Stephen’s unwavering faith and willingness to die for the gospel with the more familiar apostles, the lesson emphasized that ordinary believers today are called to exhibit the same courage in everyday conversations at work, school, and with friends. The class then linked Stephen’s martyrdom to the broader mission of the early church, explaining how his death became a catalyst for the gospel to spread to Samaria and beyond. The teacher urged listeners to consider how they might finish the race of faith, echoing the New Testament call to perseverance, and invited them to reflect on personal moments where staying true to Christ’s teachings could open doors for others. Personal anecdotes illustrated that standing firm on values, even in small workplace situations, can have lasting impact for the kingdom.
