Genesis (Part II) - Sunday AM Class

Lesson 1 of 8 January 6, 2019

In the Sunday AM class, the teacher guided the congregation through a comprehensive review of Genesis chapters 1 through 26, emphasizing the narrative arc from creation to the early patriarchal stories. He highlighted each major event – the six days of creation, the fall, Cain and Abel, the flood, the tower of Babel, Abraham’s call, the covenant of circumcision, the negotiations over Sodom, and the births of Isaac and Jacob – linking them to contemporary family experiences and encouraging personal application. The central focus of the session was Genesis 34, the story of Dinah’s abduction, and the surrounding cultural context of covenant and honor. The teacher warned against relying on speculative commentaries, urging participants to examine the Scripture directly and to read Acts 7, where Stephen summarizes the same Old Testament history before his martyrdom. The class concluded with a prayer of gratitude for the new year and a call to let the study of these “old, old stories” deepen faith and strengthen the community at Linder Road Church of Christ.

Genesis 17:1-27

And it came to pass, when Abram was ninety years and nine, the Lord appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect. And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly. And Abram fell on his face, and laughed, and said within himself, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and Sarah, my wife, she is ninety years old? And the Lord said unto Abram, Why didst thou laugh? Abram said, Because the Lord hath not done unto me even as he spake. And the Lord said, Is any thing too hard for the Lord? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. And Abram fell on his face, and laughed, and said, Oh that the children might be a blessing! And Sarah heard it in the tent, and she laughed, and said, After I am grown old, shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the Lord said unto Abram, Thy wife Sarah shall have a son; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee, I will make a covenant with him, and he shall be the father of twelve princes, and I will make a nation of him. And I will make a covenant with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee, in the same time year. And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee, I will make my covenant with him, and with his seed after him, in the generations to come. And the covenant of circumcision. And the Lord said unto Abram, Thou shalt keep my covenant, thou and thy seed after thee in their generations; this is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Even every male child among you shall be circumcised; and ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the covenant between me and you. And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every male child in your generations, which are born in your house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed. And the servant born in the house, and the one bought with money, shall be circumcised; and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. And the uncircumcised male child, whose flesh of the foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant. And Abram fell on his face, and laughed, and said within himself, Oh that the children might be a blessing!
