The Bible

Lesson 1 of 8 October 24, 2022

During the class, the teacher explained that the Bible we have today is the result of God’s intentional communication, beginning with oral transmission and moving to written commands found in Scripture. He cited Exodus 3:13, where God tells Moses to identify Him as “I AM,” and other passages such as Exodus 17:14, Joshua 24:26, Jeremiah 30:2, Luke 1:1‑4, and Isaiah 55:11 that explicitly direct the people to write, preserve, and proclaim God’s Word. The lesson also noted how prophets like Ezekiel and the apostles in Acts and Revelation were instructed to record divine revelations. The teacher then outlined the historical timeline of the canon: the Pentateuch and the prophetic books, a period of silence, the life, ministry, and resurrection of Jesus, and the subsequent collection of New Testament writings over roughly sixty years. He emphasized that the Bible’s preservation is supported by centuries of data and that its purpose fulfills God’s promises rather than being a mere human artifact. The class set the stage for the next session, which will examine manuscript evidence, translation history, and the formation of the biblical canon.

Exodus 3:13

Then Moses said to God, Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, The God of your fathers has sent me to you. Now they may say to me, What is his name? What shall I tell them? God said to Moses, I am who I am. And he said, Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, I am has sent you.
