Timothy and Titus

Lesson 11 of 13 March 17, 2022

The teacher opened the session by reminding the class that 2 Timothy was Paul’s final, deeply personal letter written from a Roman prison to his young protégé Timothy. He outlined Timothy’s strengths—his spiritual pedigree, missionary experience, and the laying on of hands—while also noting his youth, shyness, and health challenges. Paul’s encouragement centered on guarding the "good deposit" of the gospel (2 Tim 1:14) and enduring the abandonment of believers in Asia (2 Tim 1:15). The lesson then shifted to the metaphor of a generational relay, comparing Paul’s passing of the torch to historical moments such as President Kennedy’s inauguration and Coach K’s succession at Duke. The teacher emphasized that Timothy was called to assume Paul’s mantle, train faithful successors (2 Tim 2:2), and stand firm like a Roman soldier wearing the full armor of God (Eph 6:11). By linking biblical imagery with contemporary examples, the class underscored the sober responsibility of every believer to preserve and transmit the gospel, lest a single generation allow it to fade.
