Side Roads of Life

Lesson 7 of 8 April 5, 2018

In the opening segment of the class, Richard Sutton welcomed the attendees and invited them to share the motivations behind their conversions. Participants recounted varied reasons—family influence, a desire for salvation, fear of hell, and a search for fulfillment—demonstrating that each individual's path to Christ is unique yet centered on the same divine invitation. Sutton then transitioned to the core theme of the series: the return of Jesus and the study of eschatology. He defined the term, traced its Greek roots, and described its four major components—death, judgment, heaven, and hell. By referencing Luke 16 and Matthew 24, he illustrated biblical teaching on eternal destinies and the prophetic signs of Christ’s second coming. The class explored how eschatology is not merely an abstract doctrine but a lived hope that influences daily decisions and spiritual readiness. Sutton emphasized that while fear can initially draw people toward faith, true Christian living grows out of love for God and anticipation of He will return. He encouraged the group to view the study of the "last things" as a catalyst for deeper devotion, reminding them that every life ends at a crossroads—either at the throne of God or in separation. The session closed with prayer and a call to continue pursuing understanding of the end times in future Wednesday evenings.
