Lectureship - Restore My Soul - Keeping Your Eye on the Ball - Neal Pollard

Lesson 1 of 15 October 12, 2018

During the evening’s lecture, Brother Neil Pollard opened the 2024 Lectureship theme “Restore My Soul – Keeping Your Eye on the Ball” by exploring how both Old and New Testament writers used sport imagery to illustrate spiritual vigilance. He described archaeological evidence of ancient ball games and highlighted Isaiah 22:18’s reference to a ball being tossed, establishing that the early audience would have understood such metaphors. Pollard then turned to the Apostle Paul, citing 1 Timothy 6:12, 2 Timothy 2:5, and 2 Timothy 4:7 to show how Paul repeatedly employed athletic language to urge believers to “fight the good fight” and run the race with perseverance. The core of the teaching centered on 1 Corinthians 9:24‑27, where Paul compares the Christian life to a disciplined athlete who keeps his eye on the prize. Pollard applied this to personal faith, urging listeners to maintain focus on Christ, repent, and consider baptism as the decisive step toward spiritual renewal. He concluded with a heartfelt invitation for anyone desiring to commit or needing prayer to respond to God’s invitation, emphasizing the church’s role in supporting each other’s spiritual journeys.

1 Corinthians 9:24-27

Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? Run so that you may obtain it. Everyone who competes in the games exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we for a perishable wreath, but we for an imperishable wreath. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified.
