Living Hope

Lesson 21 of 38 September 4, 2023

The class opened by describing contemporary research that connected feelings of hopelessness with increased physical vulnerability and premature mortality. The teacher used these findings to set the stage for a biblical discussion on hope, emphasizing that true hope is rooted not in human effort but in God’s mercy and the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Through a careful walk through 1 Peter 1:3, Romans 3:23, Romans 5:8, 1 John 1:7‑9, and 1 Corinthians 15:14‑15, the teacher explained that the "living hope" Christians possess is a confident expectation grounded in Christ’s risen life. Real‑world illustration came from the Amber Guyger case, where the victim’s brother demonstrated forgiveness, mirroring the mercy God extends to sinners. The central message concluded that this merciful, resurrection‑based hope empowers believers to live joyfully and resiliently, even amid persecution and cultural despair.

1 Peter 1:3

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

1 Corinthians 15:14-15

And if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is in vain and your faith is in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we have testified of God that he raised Christ, whom he did not raise if in fact our testimony is false.
