Book of Malachi - Wed Night Class

Lesson 4 of 8 May 23, 2019

The class opened by asking participants to picture what the word “home” evokes, revealing common images of safety, love, and family. Members shared that the American home today feels fragile and that its development may be less prioritized than in previous generations. Drawing on these observations, the teacher linked contemporary concerns to the prophetic voice of Malachi, focusing on chapter 2 verses 14 through 16. He explained that God designed marriage as a covenant that binds a husband and wife into one, intended to produce godly offspring and protect the sanctity of the household. The passage’s harsh condemnation of divorce and treachery underscored how sin can corrupt the home’s intended beauty, turning it into shame and sorrow. The lesson concluded with a prayer and a call for believers to guard their marriages, restore holiness to their homes, and trust that God’s purpose for families remains unchanged across history. Throughout the session, the teacher emphasized the continuity between ancient prophetic warnings and modern family challenges, urging participants to apply Malachi’s call for fidelity, love, and spiritual unity within their own households. He reminded the class that, while cultural circumstances shift, the biblical standard for a home grounded in covenant love endures.

Malachi 2:14-16

Yet you say, for what reason? Because the Lord has been witness between you and the wife of your youth, with whom you have dealt treacherously. Yet she is your companion and your wife by covenant. But did he not make them one, having a remnant of the Spirit? And why one? He seeks godly offspring. Therefore, take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth. For the Lord God of Israel says that he hates divorce, for it covers one garment with violence, says the Lord of hosts. Therefore, take heed to your spirit, that you do not deal treacherously.
