Together, We Can Change the World

Lesson 1 of 6 October 6, 2019

The class began with a warm welcome and a joyful update on Guy Orbison’s wife’s complete remission from pancreatic cancer, demonstrating God’s healing power in real life. Teacher Richard Sutton then connected this testimony to the recent Back‑to‑Church series, reminding the congregation that togetherness had already been examined through peace, love, and spiritual growth. He shifted focus to the day’s theme—“Together, we can change the world”—and used the cultural phenomenon of superheroes to illustrate humanity’s longing for powerful saviors. By contrasting cinematic heroes with the quiet, consistent influence of Fred Rogers, Sutton emphasized that true transformation comes not from fantasy figures but from believers who live out Christ’s love and sacrifice. Sutton argued that the world does not need more fictional superheroes; it needs real‑world disciples who embody the gospel’s compassion, justice, and service. He urged the class to be “sold‑out” for God, to let the blood of Jesus bring peace, and to channel that peace into actionable love that reshapes communities. The central message was a call to collective action—Christ’s followers, united in purpose, can be the agents of lasting change. Throughout the lesson, the teacher reinforced the idea that by embracing God’s love and walking together, the congregation could make a tangible dent in the world, living out the biblical mandate to love one another and be salt and light in a culture craving true heroes.
