James “How to Book”

Lesson 2 of 11 July 10, 2022

The class opened with a definition of victimology, describing both its academic study of crime victims and the popular notion of glorifying a victim mindset. The teacher linked this cultural trend to the earliest biblical example in Genesis 3:9, where Adam and Eve shift blame after the fall. He argued that this tendency to blame external forces is a recurring human pattern. Turning to the New Testament, the teacher examined James’s first chapter, emphasizing that believers facing trials can either adopt a victim attitude or respond with faith that points toward God. By referencing Scripture heroes such as Job, Jeremiah, Abraham, Daniel, and especially Jesus, he highlighted how God’s people historically endure hardship, trusting God’s purpose. The discussion underscored that trials may arise from natural events, personal health, or persecution, but a Christ‑centered response transforms suffering into spiritual growth. The class concluded by encouraging a shift from blame to reliance on God, promoting perseverance and love within the Christian community.

Genesis 3:9-13

So the Lord God called out to the man, and said to him, 'Where are you?' And he said, 'I heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.' He said, 'Who told you that you were naked? Have you eaten from the tree of which I commanded you not to eat? 'The man said, 'The woman whom you gave to be with me, she gave me some of the fruit from the tree, and I ate.' The Lord God said to the woman, 'What is this that you have done?' The woman said, 'The serpent deceived me, and I ate.'

John 15:18-21

If the world hates you, you know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own. But because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you. Remember the word that I said to you: 'A servant is not greater than his master.' If they persecuted me, they will also persecute you. If they kept my word, they will keep yours also.
