Reset - Mission

Lesson 13 of 53 March 29, 2021

The class opened with a warm welcome and an update on worship services, then shifted to a compelling illustration of mission using Coca‑Cola’s global success. Richard Sutton recounted his experiences in Ghana, highlighting how the company’s motto—“think globally, act locally”—drove its expansion. He connected this business principle to the church’s calling, citing Jesus’ three commissioning statements: Matthew 28:19, Mark 16:15, and Acts 1:8. By comparing the spread of a beverage to the spread of the Gospel, Sutton emphasized that the church must pursue a worldwide vision while beginning with local, tangible actions. He then explored common perceptions of the church’s purpose—caring for members, visiting the sick, offering guidance—and affirmed their value while urging listeners not to lose sight of the overarching mission to make disciples. Using Colossians 1:23, he illustrated how the early church grew from a local witness in Jerusalem to a worldwide movement. The session concluded with a call to reset personal and corporate priorities, aligning them with the biblical mandate to think globally and act locally in service of Christ’s Great Commission.

Matthew 28:19

Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

Mark 16:15

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.
