Mission Accomplished - Sunday Evening Lesson

Lesson 3 of 10 September 17, 2018

The class began by announcing a new sister in Christ, Carolyn Mack, who had recently been rebaptized and was welcomed into the church family. Clint then shared a gripping true‑life story of pilot Walter Wyatt, who survived a storm, a broken compass, a damaged life jacket, and even bull sharks before being rescued by a Coast Guard ship. He used the tale to illustrate how humanity is lost in sin, much like a ship adrift, and how only divine rescue can save us. Turning to Scripture, Clint examined Hebrews 2:1‑3, drawing three core truths: the necessity of paying close attention to the gospel, the reliability of the message declared by angels, and the serious consequences of neglecting salvation. He explained that Jesus completed His mission—leaving heaven, suffering, dying, and rising—to rescue us from eternal death, and that His finished work gives us confidence to fulfill our own mission for God. The lesson concluded with a call to rely on Christ’s example, to remember the Lord’s Supper as a reminder of that rescue, and to step into our God‑given calling with assurance.

Hebrews 2:1-3

Therefore, we must pay much closer attention to what we've heard, lest we drift away from it. For since the message declared by angels proved to be reliable, and every transgression or disobedience received a just retribution, how shall we escape if we neglect such a great salvation? It was declared at first by the Lord, and it was attested to us by those who heard.

Hebrews 2:10-12

For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through suffering. Both the one who sanctifies and those who are sanctified have one Father, so we too should not grow weary in encouraging one another, as you see the day approaching. You have not come to something that can be touched, a blazing fire, or darkness, or gloom, or a violent wind, or the sound of a trumpet, or the voice of God speaking.

Hebrews 2:14-15

Since therefore the children share flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same things, that through death he might destroy the one who has the power of death, that is, the devil, and deliver those who through fear of death had been all their lives subject to slavery.
