Wednesday Evening Lesson

Lesson 2 of 11 July 18, 2024

In the Wednesday evening class, the teacher began with a prayer and a personal anecdote about the effort required to purchase video games as a child, using that story to illustrate the principle that any worthwhile goal requires work and sacrifice. He then transitioned to Scripture, reading Luke 9:57‑62 to show how Jesus challenged those who wanted to delay their commitment for personal concerns, emphasizing that following Him demands immediate, wholehearted devotion. Building on that, the lesson highlighted Mark 8:34‑35, where Jesus commands believers to deny themselves, take up their cross, and follow Him, pointing out that the ultimate sacrifice was already paid by Christ on the cross. References to early martyrs and Revelation 2:10 underscored that earthly suffering is minor compared to eternal glory. The class concluded by urging each participant to consider what they must willingly give up for Christ, encouraging a personal step of surrender that reflects true discipleship.

Luke 9:57-62

While they were walking along the road, a man said to him, "I will follow you wherever you go." Jesus replied, "Foxes have dens and birds have nests, but the son of man has no place to lay his head." He said to another man, "Follow me." But he replied, "Lord, first let me go bury my father." Jesus said to him, "Let the buried dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God." Still another said, "I will follow you, Lord, but first let me go back and say goodbye to my family." Jesus replied, "No one who puts the hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God."

Mark 8:34-35

Then he called to the crowd with his disciples and said, "Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me and for the gospel will save it."
