Deuteronomy

Lesson 3 of 12 January 21, 2021

During the class, Charles White reviewed the significance of the Old Testament, emphasizing that while believers live under the New Covenant, the principles found in Deuteronomy remain instructional. He recounted Moses’ death in Deuteronomy 34, noting God’s burial of Moses and the mystery surrounding his grave, and introduced Jude 1:9’s brief account of Michael’s dispute over Moses’ body as a supplemental tradition affirmed by the Holy Spirit. White then linked Moses’ earthly story to his New Testament appearances at the Transfiguration (Matthew 17, Mark 9, Luke 9), illustrating how God’s consistent character—both loving and severe—spans both covenants. The heart of the lesson focused on Deuteronomy 28, outlining the blessings promised for obedience and the curses for disobedience, and explained that special blessings, such as a personal relationship with God, require faithful obedience. The class concluded by affirming that the promises to Israel point forward to the ultimate fulfillment in heaven, urging listeners to align their will with God’s timeless standards.

Deuteronomy 28:1-68

All these blessings shall come upon you if you obey the Lord, the voice of the Lord your God.

Deuteronomy 34:5-6

The Lord spoke to Moses on Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab, opposite Jericho, and showed him the whole land of Canaan, from the Arabah, the valley of the Jordan, to the Lebanon, all the way to the region of Sidon, and the whole land of Hittites, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Perizzites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites, even to the west of the river, and the whole land of the Amalekites, and the western side of the Jordan, and the valley of the Lebanon, from the foot of Mount Hermon to the place where the Brook of Arnon meets the Brook of Jabbok and the Brook of the Jordan. And the Lord said to Moses, This is the land which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, that I would give to your descendants, not as an inheritance for them, but that they may inherit it, and I will drive them out before you. And the Lord spoke to him on the same day, saying, You shall not go over there. You shall not see the land that lies beyond the Jordan, for the mountain of Ephraim, and the valley of the Arnon and the valley of the Jabbok and the valley of the Jordan. You shall not cross the Jordan, for this is your end. You shall die there in the land of the Amorites, for the Amorites are strong. And the Lord buried him in the valley of the Jordan, in the land of Moab, in the valley opposite the town of Jericho. And no one knows the place of his burial to this day.

Jude 1:9

Yet even Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil about the body of Moses, did not dare to pronounce a condemnatory judgment, but said, The Lord rebuke you!
