When Jesus Returns

Lesson 2 of 8 May 17, 2018

In this fourth lesson of the “When Jesus Returns” series, Richard Sutton guided the class through an overview of eschatological viewpoints, contrasting amillennial, premillennial, and dispensational premillennial interpretations. He referenced 1 Thessalonians 4:13‑18 to frame the biblical basis for the rapture and emphasized that cultural depictions—such as movies and cartoons—often misrepresent the event. The teacher then shifted focus to God’s unchanging natural and spiritual laws, illustrating how phenomena like gravity and the impossibility of two solid objects sharing the same space continue to function until Christ’s visible return, illustrating that divine order persists despite humanity’s limited understanding. The session included a heartfelt prayer for perseverance and faithfulness, acknowledging that believers may not see overt divine interventions in world events, yet are called to live under God’s established laws. Sutton highlighted the difficulty of picturing the eternal in spatial terms, reminding the class that God, as Spirit, transcends time, space, and matter. The central message urged listeners to remain steadfast in the hope of Christ’s return while faithfully obeying God’s will today.

1 Thessalonians 4:16-17

For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. After that, we who are still alive and remain will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever.
