Family Class 4

Lesson 3 of 13 January 28, 2019

In Family Class 4, the teacher reviewed the previous lesson’s emphasis on love as the foundation for parenting, noting that Jesus commanded love in Matthew and that love is a skill to be practiced. The class introduced Dr. Gary Chapman’s five love languages and encouraged parents to identify and speak each family member’s primary language, using examples of words of encouragement, physical touch, and acts of service. The central focus shifted to building trust between parents and children. The teacher defined trust as a sustained confidence that goes beyond emotion, and explained how consistency and avoiding exasperation (Ephesians 6:1‑4) are essential for fostering that trust. Practical illustrations—such as responding kindly to a child’s messy donut—highlighted the importance of generous, trustworthy responses. The discussion also examined the traditional role of fathers in modeling trust, while affirming that mothers share this responsibility. The class concluded with a call to create a reliable, loving environment where children feel safe to approach their parents, even after mistakes.

John 13:34-35

A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples if you love one another.
