Lesson 8 of 9 March 21, 2025

The class began by reviewing the previous week’s discussion of the teleological argument and the notion of irreducibly complex systems, using examples like the bombardier beetle and the human eye to challenge evolutionary explanations. The teacher then shifted focus to the Genesis Flood, reading selected verses that detailed the chronology of events and the specific durations anchored to Noah’s lifespan. He emphasized the clear sequence of seven‑day preparations, a 40‑day rainstorm, a 150‑day rise of the waters, and a subsequent 150‑day recession, linking these intervals to symbolic numbers throughout Scripture. Cleverdon highlighted how the flood account provides a concrete, datable framework that opposes the geological column’s evolutionary timeline. He drew connections between the flood’s timing and the creation week, noting the repetition of sevens and forties as significant biblical patterns. The lesson concluded with a discussion of the “uncreation” phase where the earth returned to a formless water ball, setting the stage for a recreated world, and underscored the theological importance of God’s ordered plan as revealed in the flood narrative.

Genesis 7:6-12

Now Noah was 600 years old when the flood of water came upon the earth. Then Noah and his sons, his wife and his sons' wives, with him entered the ark because of the waters of the flood. And they all went into the ark to Noah by twos, male and female, as God had commanded Noah. Now it came after the seven days that the waters of the flood came upon the earth. In the 600th year of Noah's life, in the second month, on the 17th day of that month, on that day, all of the fountains of the great deep burst open, and the floodgates of the sky were opened. And the rain fell upon the earth for 40 days and for 40 nights.

Genesis 8:3-4

And the water decreased steadily from the earth. And at the end of 150 days, the water decreased. And the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end of the 100 days, the water decreased. ... In the seventh month, on the 17th day of the month, the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat.

Genesis 7:13-17

On this very same day, Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons, with them all entered into the ark. Those that entered, male and female, all of the flesh, entered as God had commanded him, and the Lord closed the door behind him. Then the flood came upon the earth for 40 days, and the water increased and lifted up the ark, so that it rose above the earth.
