Abundant Grace - Eric Lyons

Lesson 9 of 16 October 20, 2024

During the class, Eric Lyons examined the turbulent life of King Manasseh, focusing on the accounts in 2 Chronicles 33 and 2 Kings 21. He outlined Manasseh’s early reign of idolatry—building high places, offering sacrifices to foreign gods, and even sacrificing his own sons—culminating in the shedding of much innocent blood throughout Jerusalem. The teacher highlighted how, after being captured by the Assyrians and humbled in captivity, Manasseh earnestly prayed, humbled himself, and sought God’s mercy. God responded by restoring him to his throne, prompting Manasseh to remove the foreign idols and restore true worship in the temple. Lyons connected this ancient redemption story to contemporary events, such as the 2017 Antioch, Tennessee church shooting, emphasizing that the same abundant grace that transformed Manasseh calls believers today to extend forgiveness and compassion, even toward perpetrators. Lyons also referenced Paul’s transformation from persecutor to apostle (1 Corinthians 15) and reminded the class of God’s covenant promises (Genesis 15) and the command to reject idolatry (Leviticus 18). The central message was that God’s grace is not forced but offered generously to those who humble themselves, inviting a personal, repentant response that leads to lasting change and restored relationship with the Lord.
