Widowhood Workshop

Lesson 1 of 5 June 5, 2021

The Widowhood Workshop opened with a warm welcome and prayer, followed by an introduction to Brother Dean Miller, whose personal experience of losing his wife after a long marriage inspired the series. Dean emphasized that the class would not be a sermon but a candid conversation about loss, urging participants to speak openly about the challenges of widowhood and the broader reality of life in a fallen world, citing 1 John 5:19 as a reminder that the world is under the sway of the wicked one. Using the story of Job, Dean illustrated how suffering remains part of God’s sovereign plan, and how blessings can ultimately outweigh burdens even amid deep grief. He invited attendees to share observations, such as describing the world into which babies are born, and highlighted the importance of acknowledging both blessings and burdens. The session concluded with a promise of continued discussion, a song led by a brother from California, and a closing prayer, setting the tone for the weekend’s focus on compassion, biblical truth, and practical support for widows and widowers. Throughout the evening, Dean’s humility as a student of loss, rather than an expert, fostered an environment where participants felt safe to ask questions and share personal stories, laying a foundation for ongoing fellowship and spiritual growth within the Linder Road Church of Christ community.
