Study of 1st John - Clint Davison - 10-11-2020

Lesson 2 of 12 October 12, 2020

The class began by reviewing the previous week’s study of 1 John Chapter 1, emphasizing John’s urgent call to confess sin. Clint explained that the Greek word for “confess” means to speak in agreement with God, and he highlighted verse 10, which declares that denying sin makes us liars and dishonors God. He linked this confession to the promise of a restored relationship with Jesus and the joy described in John 1:4. Moving into Chapter 2, the teacher illustrated how John seeks to eliminate doubt in believers by assuring them of their knowledge of Christ’s presence. Through analogies of taking a test and setting parental rules, Clint showed that confidence arises when we understand and accept God’s grace, rather than cling to sin or personal expectations. The discussion highlighted obstacles such as unconfessed sin, distractions, and a limited view of God’s forgiveness, all of which hinder the abundant life Jesus offers (John 10:10). The class concluded that loving one another authentically reflects our faith and draws us closer to God, fulfilling John’s call to live in the light.

1 John 1:10

If you say, 'We have no sin,' you are deceiving yourself, and the truth is not in you.
