DEEPER ROOTS

Lesson 5 of 6 August 7, 2024

In the class titled DEEPER ROOTS – GENERATIONAL, Mike Perkins shared a personal testimony about the importance of preserving a legacy of faith across generations. He began by grounding his message in Deuteronomy 6:1‑9, emphasizing the command to impress God’s commandments on children and to weave them into daily life. He connected this biblical mandate to contemporary challenges, noting the spiritual decline among youth, the impact of social media, and the pervasive influence of the devil as warned in 1 Peter 5:8. Mike highlighted how the adversity faced by his own family illustrates the need for consistent, courageous living that models Christlikeness even when the world opposes it. He also referenced Isaiah 5:20 to illustrate the moral inversion many young people encounter. Mike urged parents, mentors, and church leaders to go beyond providing physical care and instead demonstrate unwavering faithfulness, especially when cultural pressures threaten to deter believers. By sharing the story of his family’s faith lineage, he encouraged the congregation to actively teach, protect, and equip the next generation, trusting that such faithful stewardship would have eternal significance. The lesson concluded with a call to intentionally bind God’s word on our hearts, homes, and foreheads, ensuring that the legacy of faith endures beyond our earthly lives.

Deuteronomy 6:1-9

These are the commands, decrees and laws the Lord your God directed me to teach you to observe in the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess, so that you, your children and their children after them may fear the Lord your God as long as you live... Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength... Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road... Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates.

1 Peter 5:8

Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.
