Samuel

Lesson 11 of 15 November 30, 2023

The class examined Samuel’s initial encounter with God as recorded in 1 Samuel 3:1‑21, emphasizing how a young boy, serving under Eli at Shiloh, responded repeatedly to the Lord’s call with “Here I am.” The teacher explained that this event occurred during a period when divine revelation was scarce, likening the physical darkness of the temple lamp to Israel’s spiritual darkness. Eli’s initial confusion and eventual recognition of God’s voice were highlighted, showing both his remaining discernment and his own failings. The discussion moved to the content of the Lord’s message—an impending judgment upon Eli’s house because of the sins of his sons and Eli’s neglect—illustrating the consequences of unaddressed corruption in leadership. Samuel’s obedience, his willingness to convey the message without concealment, and the subsequent affirmation that the Lord would be with him forever were presented as models of faithful service. The class concluded by noting how Samuel’s reputation spread throughout Israel, marking the transition from the era of judges to the monarchy and underscoring the lasting impact of listening attentively to God’s call.

1 Samuel 3:1-21

Now the boy Samuel ministered to the Lord before Eli, and the word of the Lord was rare in those days. There was no widespread revelation, and it came to pass at the time while Eli was lying down in his place, and when his eyes began to grow so dim that he could not see, and before the lamp of God went out in the tabernacle of the Lord, where the ark of God was, and while Samuel was lying down, that the Lord called Samuel, and he answered, Here I am.
