GRACE IN THE SACRIFICE AND VITORY OF JESUS - John Moore

Lesson 1 of 16 October 19, 2024

In the class, John Moore taught that baptism is more than a ritual; it is an immersion into the death and resurrection of Jesus, echoing Paul’s teaching in Romans 6 about being buried with Christ and raised to new life. He emphasized that the cross is central to the gospel, warning against a “baptismal regenerationist” view that water alone saves. By drawing on Acts 2:38, Titus 2, and other passages, he explained that true salvation involves faith, repentance, and the grace revealed through Christ’s sacrifice. Moore then shifted focus to the character of God, describing Him as glorious, holy, just, and intimately involved in creation. He used examples from Genesis, Acts 17, 1 Corinthians 2, and Habakkuk to illustrate God’s holiness and justice, underscoring that grace is God's response to humanity’s need for righteousness. The lesson concluded with a call to appreciate the depth of God’s grace, to understand why Jesus died, and to live in the victorious freedom that comes from embracing that grace.

Acts 2:38

Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 6:3-4

Or don't you know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him through baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.
