The Path Principle

Lesson 2 of 38 January 16, 2023

In this Bible study class titled 'The Path Principle,' teacher Richard Sutton continued a mini-series on Proverbs 7 and 8, emphasizing the importance of choosing the right path in life toward the ultimate destination of heaven. He contrasted the foolish young man in Proverbs 7, who lacked sense and was lured by an adulterous woman into a path of destruction, with the wise path depicted in Proverbs 8, where wisdom is personified as a woman calling out publicly to guide the naive and foolish toward prudence and noble truths. Sutton highlighted how the young man's desires overrode his judgment because he ignored God's direction, while wisdom—representing God's voice—is readily available and insistent. Sutton explained that true wisdom, defined as knowledge applied rightly, comes from three main sources: prayerfully asking God as instructed in James 1, studying Scripture which is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness per 2 Timothy 3:16-17, and seeking counsel from experienced godly people. He reinforced John 14:6 as the roadmap to the Father, urging believers to build their lives around this eternal goal. Through a personal anecdote about getting lost while hunting in Colorado, Sutton illustrated the peril of ignoring divine guidance, underscoring the central message that aligning decisions with God's wisdom ensures a safe path to His presence.

Proverbs 7:6-23

For at the window of my house I looked out through my lattice, and I saw among the naive, and discerned among the youths, a young man lacking sense. Passing through the streets near her corner, he takes the way to her house. And in the twilight, in the evening, in the middle of the night, and in the darkness. And behold, a woman comes to meet him dressed as a harlot. And cunning of heart, she is boisterous and rebellious. Her feet do not remain at home. She is now in the streets, now in the squares, and lurks by every corner. So she seizes him and kisses him, and with brazen face she says to him, I was due to offer peace offerings. Today I have paid my vows. Therefore, I have come out to meet you, to seek your presence earnestly, and I have found you. Well, you can go on, and it has some salacious terms there.

Proverbs 8:1-11

Does not wisdom call? And understanding lift up her voice? She takes her stand at the top of the heights, beside the way, where the paths meet. She cries out beside the gates, at the entry of the city, where the people of the city gather. How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge? Turn at my reproof; behold, I will pour out my mind to you; I will make my knowledge known to you. Because I have warned you, and you are sure to know that the one who warned you is the one who is ready, and that I am right. Take my instruction as silver, and knowledge as gold. For wisdom is better than rubies, and all that is desired cannot compare to her.
