James the _How To_ Book

Lesson 7 of 11 August 21, 2022

The class opened with a brief recap of the previous lesson on the tongue and transitioned into James 3:13‑18, emphasizing that true wisdom is demonstrated through humble deeds rather than boastful speech. The teacher warned that many desire the role of teacher, but without a heart grounded in heaven‑sent wisdom, one risks spreading falsehoods. The discussion moved to James 4, where the congregation examined how selfish ambition and envy spark quarrels, and how friendship with the world becomes enmity toward God. The teacher highlighted several verses that call believers to submit to God, resist the devil, and seek divine humility, promising that God lifts the humble. Personal stories, from childhood church film‑strip presentations to reflections on modern cultural figures, illustrated the pull of worldly wisdom and the necessity of pursuing heavenly purity, peace‑loving, and merciful conduct. The lesson concluded with practical questions prompting participants to evaluate their own motivations in teaching, parenting, and daily interactions, encouraging a daily reliance on Scripture to shape a life that reflects godly wisdom.

James 3:13-18

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbor bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth. Such wisdom does not come down from heaven, but is earthly, unspiritual, of the devil. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is, first of all, pure, then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace raise a harvest of righteousness.

James 4:1-10

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don't they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but don't get it? You kill and covet. But you cannot have what you want? You quarrel fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive because you ask with wrong motives. That you may spend what you get on your own pleasures, on your pleasures. You adulterous people, don't you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. Or do you think that Scripture says without reason that the spirit he caused to live in us envies intensely, but he gives us more grace? That is why Scripture says God opposes the proud, gives grace to the humble. Submit yourselves then to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Come near to God and he will come near to you. Wash your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Grieve, mourn, and wail. Change your laughter into mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord and he will lift you up.
