First John - Clint Davison - 12-20-2020

Lesson 11 of 12 December 21, 2020

The class wrapped up the study of 1 John by reading verses 13‑15 of chapter 5, where the apostle declares that his writing is intended for those who believe in the Son of God so they may know they have eternal life. Pastor Clint highlighted the connection to John 20:30‑31, noting that both authors wrote to inspire belief that leads to life. He explained that true belief, as John presents it, is not merely intellectual agreement but a lived confidence that manifests in love, fellowship, and service, confronting early heresies that downplayed Jesus’ divinity. The discussion also revisited 1 John 1:4, emphasizing that the purpose of the letter is to bring joy and completion to believers when they recognize Jesus as the Messiah. Throughout the lesson, the teacher stressed the quality of the eternal life believers already possess and urged the congregation to pursue deeper, active faith amid holiday distractions. Practical reminders included the church’s ongoing gift‑distribution project and encouragement to continue embodying the love and obedience that John describes. The class concluded with a call to maintain this confident belief as they move into the study of 2 John and 3 John in the coming weeks.

1 John 5:13

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

John 20:30-31

Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book. But these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in His name.
