The Conquest

Lesson 12 of 12 September 22, 2022

The class began with a review of the previous lesson’s discussion on the cities of refuge and the pasture lands for the Levites, then moved into Joshua chapter 22 where the Transjordan tribes built an altar that sparked fear of rebellion among the western tribes. The teacher highlighted how both groups assumed the worst of each other, but peace was restored when they listened to each other's explanations, illustrating the power of communication and trust in God’s covenant. Next, the lesson transitioned to Joshua’s later life, focusing on his final address to Israel in chapter 23. The teacher emphasized Joshua’s charge to “be very strong” and remain faithful to the law, warning against intermarriage and idolatry that could become a snare. He also explored key Hebrew terms such as “dabach” (cling) and connected them to the marriage covenant (Genesis 2:24). Throughout, the class underscored the continuity of God’s faithfulness—from the altar dispute to Joshua’s exhortation—urging believers to cling to God’s promises and avoid the pitfalls of compromise.

Joshua 22:5

And this is going to actually be coming up again this week as well. Very similar things that Joshua will say to the people.

Joshua 23:6-8

Therefore, be very strong to keep and to do all that is written in the book of the law of Moses, turning aside from it neither to the right hand nor to the left, that you may not mix with these nations that remain among you... But you shall cling to the Lord your God, just as you have done to this day.
