Faith that goes to the Well

Lesson 17 of 38 August 14, 2023

During the class, the teacher emphasized that faith is essential for pleasing God and surviving spiritually, emotionally, and physically. He highlighted Hebrews 11, especially verse 1, which defines faith as the assurance of things hoped for, and reminded the group that Romans 10:17 teaches that faith comes by hearing God’s Word. To illustrate the insufficiency of a "bottled" faith, he used the biblical narrative of Abraham, Sarah, Hagar, and Isaac found in Genesis 21, focusing on verse 9 where Sarah demands that Hagar and her son be sent away. The teacher connected this event to the image of a single skin of water in a harsh desert, showing that limited, stale faith cannot sustain believers in the wilderness of life. He urged the congregation to grow their faith through community, Scripture study, and obedience rather than relying on a fixed amount they think they already have. By comparing weak faith to lukewarm drinks and stale water, he challenged listeners to seek a deeper, more refreshing relationship with God, trusting that He will provide abundantly as He did for Hagar and her son in the barren land.

Hebrews 11:1

Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.

Romans 10:17

Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

Genesis 21:9

Sarah saw the son of Hagar, the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, mocking. Therefore she said to Abraham, 'Drive out this maid and her son, for the son of this maid shall not be in heirship with my son Isaac.'
