Last Days

Lesson 5 of 11 May 12, 2025

During the class, Richard Sutton examined Jesus’ eschatological teachings in Matthew chapter 24, interpreting the imagery of the Son of Man appearing on clouds and the gathering of the elect as both literal prophecy and symbolic language. He clarified that the Greek term for “angel” can denote a messenger, using Mark 1:2 and the example of John the Baptist to illustrate how messengers prepare the way for Christ. Sutton then linked the historical fulfillment of Jesus’ prediction about Jerusalem’s destruction to the removal of Jewish opposition, which allowed the gospel to expand dramatically, as noted in Colossians 1:23 and Paul’s experiences recorded in 1 Corinthians 11. The teacher further explained the parable of the fig tree (Matt 24:32‑33) as a sign‑reading tool, urging believers to recognize the signs of impending tribulation and to remain vigilant. He concluded with the powerful promise that while heaven and earth will pass away, the words of Jesus will endure forever (Matt 24:35), reinforcing the reliability of Christ’s predictions and encouraging the congregation to live in readiness for His return.

Mark 13:26

They will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory.

Mark 13:31

Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

Mark 13:28-30

Now learn this from the fig tree: When its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So you too, when you see these things happening, know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass until all these things have happened.
