1st and 2nd Peter

Lesson 10 of 11 September 12, 2025

The class opened with prayer and a brief review of the ongoing scholarly conversation about the authorship of 2 Peter, noting that the early church accepted the epistle well before the 4th‑century canon debates. The teacher highlighted the connection between 2 Peter and Jude, and introduced the central theme of the letter: the word “knowledge.” After reading 2 Peter 1:3‑15, the group focused on the eight qualities listed in verses 5‑7, discussing how they function like a skill tree that encourages continual growth rather than a checklist. Participants compared the virtues to practical virtues such as faith (Hebrews 11:6), moral excellence (Philippians 4:8), self‑control (1 Peter 4:2), perseverance, godliness, brotherly affection (Galatians 6:10), and agape love (Colossians 3:14, 1 Corinthians 13). The discussion concluded that these qualities keep believers effective and productive in the knowledge of Christ, as Peter warns in verses 8‑10. The class reflected on the dangers of nearsightedness, pride, and complacency, urging each member to confirm their calling and election by cultivating the full spectrum of virtues. The session ended with a reminder that growth is ongoing and that love remains the ultimate binding force.

2 Peter 1:3-15

His divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness. Through the knowledge of him who called us to his own glory and excellence. By which he has granted to us his precious and very great promises. So that through them you may become partakers of the divine nature. Having escaped from the corruption that is in the world because of sinful desire. For this very reason make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue. And virtue with knowledge. And knowledge with self-control. And self-control with steadfastness. And steadfastness with godliness. And godliness with brotherly affection. And brotherly affection with love. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing. They keep you from being ineffective and unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind. Having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins. Therefore brothers be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election. For if you practice these qualities you will never fall. For in this way you will be richly provided. There will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Therefore I intend always to remind you of these qualities. Though you know them and are established in the truth that you have.
