Heroes of the Bible - Abraham’s Test

Lesson 17 of 53 April 26, 2021

The teacher opened with announcements about upcoming church events before turning to the lesson on Abraham as a biblical hero. He explained that Abraham’s heroism was not based on outward achievements but on his unwavering faith, citing Genesis 15:6, Romans 3:22, and Galatians 3:6 to show that belief in God is counted as righteousness. The class highlighted God’s promises to Abraham—making him a great nation and giving him a son despite his and Sarah’s advanced ages—culminating in the birth of Isaac (Genesis 21:1‑5). Continuing, the teacher examined the pivotal test of Abraham in Genesis 22, where God commanded him to offer Isaac as a burnt offering. Hebrews 11:17‑19 was referenced to illustrate how Abraham’s willingness demonstrated ultimate trust. The lesson emphasized that God’s testing, though difficult, produces endurance and deepens faith. The teacher encouraged participants to view life’s challenges as “pop tests” that refine character, urging them to apply Abraham’s example of obedience in their own walk with Christ.

Genesis 15:6

Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him as righteousness.

Genesis 21:1-5

And the Lord visited Sarah as he had said, and the Lord did to Sarah as he had spoken. And Sarah conceived, and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, in the fullness of the time. And Sarah said, "God has made me laugh, even those who hear will laugh with me." And she said, "Who would have said to Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? For I have borne him a son in his old age." And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
