What is my purpose_ - Jared McCormick - Sep 20th

Lesson 9 of 24 September 21, 2020

In this Bible study, teacher Jared McCormick addressed the universal question many Christians ask: "What is my purpose?" He established a biblical framework rooted in Romans 1:1-7, demonstrating how Paul defended his apostolic authority by first identifying himself as a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, and set apart for the Gospel. McCormick explained that the Greek word "euangelion" (gospel) carried significant weight in the first-century context, traditionally announcing military victory or political change. He showed that Jesus embodies this "good news" as King (descendant of David), Messiah, Son of God (through His divine nature), and Lord (having authority over all). Therefore, believers' foundational purpose is to belong to Jesus Christ and be called to be saints. To translate this purpose into practical living, McCormick turned to 1 Thessalonians 4:1-12, where Paul instructs the church that God's will is sanctification—living holy, pure lives set apart for Him. This involves avoiding sexual immorality, controlling one's body in honor, and treating others justly. McCormick emphasized that sanctification is not a destination but an ongoing process requiring intentional planning and growth. Using the metaphor of gardening, he illustrated that spiritual development demands consistent effort: planning, watering, weeding, and pruning. He concluded that believers must evaluate where they stand in their relationship with God and intentionally walk toward greater obedience, understanding that purpose is found in continuous growth toward pleasing God.

Romans 1:1-7

Paul, a servant of Christ Jesus, called to be an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God, the gospel he promised beforehand through his prophets and the holy scriptures... Jesus Christ our Lord... declared with power to be the Son of God by his resurrection from the dead.

1 Thessalonians 4:7

For God did not call us to be impure, but to live a holy life.
