Bound - Wednesday Evening Class

Lesson 3 of 7 September 6, 2018

The class explored how God’s covenant promises to Abraham extended to all nations, using a series of Old Testament examples of Gentile believers. Larry Johnson explained that figures such as Melchizedek, Jethro, Rahab, Naaman, and the widow of Zarephath demonstrated faith before the coming of Christ, and he linked their stories to the prophetic outreach noted in Jeremiah 1:5 and Hebrews 1:1. He emphasized that God’s plan was not limited to Israel but embraced the whole world, pointing to the Magi’s journey and the humbled confession of Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel 4:37 as evidence of divine work among Gentile peoples. The teacher then revisited Abraham’s threefold promise—nation, name, and worldwide blessing—citing Genesis 12:2‑3, 15:17‑18, 17:5‑11, 14, and 22:17‑18. He connected these promises to the New Testament warning in Romans 11:22 about remaining in God’s kindness. The class concluded by urging believers to reaffirm their covenant with Christ, remembering that pride leads to humbling, as seen in Zedekiah’s tragedy, while humility opens the way to God’s gracious work across all peoples.

Daniel 4:37

Jeremiah 1:5

Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you came out of the womb I consecrated you; I appointed you a prophet to the nations
