Fireside Devotional - Butch Amyx - Retreat

Lesson 3 of 4 August 6, 2025

Butch Amyx recounted his early life marked by neglect, parental alcoholism, and a series of reckless choices that led him to the brink of tragedy. He described a childhood without consistent Christian guidance, frequent exposure to danger, and a brief encounter with prison that served as a stark reality check. Despite the chaos, occasional visits to his grandparents introduced him to worship and planted a seed of hope. When Butch began dating Patty, her invitation to church opened the door to genuine fellowship. The compassionate deacon’s question, “What are you doing here?” prompted self‑examination, and the teachings of Ecclesiastes 3:11, 2 Peter 3:9, Psalm 33:11, Psalm 32:8, and Romans 5:8 illuminated God’s patient plan for his redemption. After consistent attendance, study, and prayer, he felt a heavy weight lift and chose baptism alongside Patty’s sister. This step marked a turning point, leading to restored relationships, a converted sister, and a father who later embraced faith. Since obeying the gospel, Butch testified to a blessed, purposeful life, emphasizing that God’s love transforms even the most broken histories.

Ecclesiastes 3:11

He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, He has set eternity in the human heart.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead, he is patient, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
