Called to Commitment -1_11_2025

Lesson 2 of 52 January 13, 2025

The class began with a vivid anecdote about an elderly man praying daily at the Western Wall, underscoring the perseverance of a committed prayer life even when results seemed uncertain. Teacher Richard Sutton then linked this perseverance to Paul’s declaration in Philippians 3:7‑14 that believers must "press on" toward a deeper knowledge of Jesus and the hope of resurrection, emphasizing that commitment is a forward‑moving pursuit rather than a static decision. Sutton highlighted the difference between a mere decision and true commitment by referencing the stories in Luke 9:57‑62 and Matthew 8:20, where Jesus tells potential followers that following Him requires total dedication—no partial or reversible commitments. He used analogies of pilots, athletes, soldiers, and missionaries to illustrate that commitment demands unwavering loyalty, even when the path is costly or uncertain. The central message concluded that Christians must place Christ as Lord of their lives, echoing Jesus’ own commitment in Gethsemane (Matt 26:39) and urging each listener to assess the depth of their own dedication to the call of Christ.

Philippians 3:7-14

But whatever gains I had, these I have come to regard as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and regard them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but one that comes through faith in Christ, the righteousness from God based on faith. My intention is that I may know him and the power of his resurrection and the sharing of his sufferings by becoming like him in his death, so that, by any means possible, I may attain the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained this or have already reached the goal; but I press on to make it my own, because Christ Jesus has made me his own. Beloved, I do not consider that I have already taken hold of it, but I press on to lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has already laid hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider that I have made it my own, but one thing I do: forgetting what lies behind and straining forward to what lies ahead, I press on toward the goal of the heavenly call of God in Christ Jesus.
