Peter and John’s Courage- Clint Davison

Lesson 1 of 6 August 7, 2023

The class began by naming personal fears—spiders, heights, public speaking, career shifts—and acknowledged the human tendency to avoid them. The teacher then illustrated true courage through the example of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who, despite an opportunity to remain safely abroad, returned to Germany to resist the Nazis, ultimately sacrificing his life. Shifting to Scripture, the session examined God’s charge to Joshua in Joshua 1, noting the repeated command to "be strong and courageous" and the promise of God’s continual presence, just as He had with Moses. The teacher connected this to the historic transition of leadership from Moses to Joshua, referencing Numbers 27, the incident at Meribah (Numbers 20), and the rebellion recorded in Deuteronomy 32, emphasizing that leadership often involves confronting fear and opposition. Further, the class highlighted how God assures Joshua (and us) that He will be with us wherever we go (Joshua 1:9) and related this to Jesus’ promise in Matthew 28:20. The central message concluded that authentic Christian courage is anchored in trusting God’s presence, obeying His word, and stepping out of comfort zones to fulfill His purposes today.
