The Heart of Giving

Lesson 49 of 52 December 15, 2025

During the class titled "The Heart of Giving," Richard Sutton taught that giving is not a financial requirement for God but a vital practice that shapes a believer's heart. He began by exploring Jesus' words in Matthew 6, especially verses 19, 21, and 24, explaining that where we place our treasure, our heart follows, and that we cannot serve both God and money. Sutton illustrated how generosity retrains us to love God above all, using the example of the rich young ruler from Mark 10, where Jesus demanded the surrender of all possessions to break the power of greed. The teacher then connected these scriptures to everyday life, describing how money can become a rival master and how true freedom comes when we release that grip. He emphasized that God already possesses everything, yet He values our willingness to give as a sign of trust and devotion. The lesson concluded with a call to view giving as a heart‑changing act that supports the church’s ministries and reflects the Kingdom values, encouraging each listener to examine their own priorities and treasures.

Matthew 6:19-21

Do not lay up treasures on earth where moth and rust destroy, and thieves break in and steal, but lay up treasure in heaven where moth and rust do not destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart is also.

Matthew 6:33

But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.
