Book of Hebrews

Lesson 8 of 10 June 10, 2018

The class opened with prayer and a review of last week’s discussion on Hebrews 11, emphasizing the perseverance of the ancient believers who, despite suffering and never seeing the consummation of God’s promises, remained faithful. The teacher highlighted that these “cloud of witnesses” serve as encouragement for present believers to run the race to the end, just as Christ endured the cross and now reigns at the right hand of God. The focus then turned to Hebrews 6, where the teacher unpacked the grave warning that it is impossible to restore to repentance those who have deliberately fallen away after experiencing the Holy Spirit and the promises of God. Through comparative analysis of the Old and New Covenants—using 2 Corinthians 3 and other passages—the teacher explained that the new covenant carries greater responsibility and, consequently, a proportionately greater consequence for apostasy. The discussion referenced 2 Peter 2, the unforgivable sin against the Holy Spirit in Matthew, Mark, and John 5, and affirmed that true apostasy is a conscious, purposeful rejection of Christ, a sin only possible for a true believer. The class concluded with encouragement to remember our pilgrim identity, remain steadfast, and rely on God’s grace.

Hebrews 11:39-40

And these all, though commended through their faith, did not receive what was promised, since God had provided something better for us that apart from us they should not be made perfect.

Hebrews 6:4-6

It is impossible to renew again to repentance those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, and have shared in the Holy Spirit, and have tasted the goodness of the Word of God and the powers of the age to come, and then have fallen away, since they are crucifying again the Son of God to their own harm and holding Him up to contempt.

Hebrews 12:1

Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight and the sin that clings to us, and let us run with endurance the race that lies before us.
