The Model Prayer

Lesson 35 of 36 December 20, 2021

The class opened with a reflective question about the most memorable gift a person has received, sharing a moving testimony of a two‑year‑old receiving a life‑saving kidney from a stranger. The teacher linked that personal gratitude to the ultimate gift described in Galatians 4, explaining that before Christ’s birth believers were like children under guardianship—"slaves" to the law—until the "fullness of time" when God sent His Son. By examining verses 1‑4, the lesson highlighted how Christ's incarnation fulfilled God’s plan, transforming believers from slaves to heirs and sons, capable of calling God "Abba". Historical context was woven in, noting that after Alexander the Great’s conquests and the spread of the Greek language, the world was culturally prepared for the gospel. The teacher argued that God’s timing was deliberate: the law had served as a tutor, the Roman Empire provided infrastructure, and the lingua‑ franca facilitated rapid communication. Illustrations like cherry blossoms and an elder who humbled himself reinforced the theme that God "stoops down" to our level, making Christ’s humble birth the greatest present. The class concluded by urging participants to adopt Christ’s attitude of humility and gratitude, echoing the model prayer’s focus on relationship with the Father.

Galatians 4:4-7

But when the fullness of time came, God sent forth his Son, born of a woman, born under the law, so that he might redeem those of us who are under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. Because you are sons of God, he has sent forth the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, 'Abba, Father.' Therefore, you are no longer a slave, but a son. And if a son, then an heir through God.
