What Is My Mission_ - Sunday Morning Sermon

Lesson 1 of 12 August 12, 2018

In the fourth week of the “Made for Mission” series, Richard Sutton taught that every Christian is called to a specific purpose: to spread the love of God and the good news of Jesus Christ. He reviewed previous lessons on the universal call to mission, the nature of God’s will, and the question, “What is my mission?” emphasizing that mission is urgent, personal, and often pushes believers out of their comfort zones. Sutton highlighted how Satan seeks to distract believers, using the examples of Jesus’ encounters with those who wanted to delay discipleship, showing that true commitment means laying aside personal comforts and competing priorities.\n\nHe then turned to the practical side of mission: the message we share. Using Mark 5:1‑2 as a case study of Jesus meeting a demon‑possessed man among the Gentiles, Sutton illustrated that the gospel transcends cultural barriers, much like learning a foreign language. He urged listeners to keep their message simple, focused on the life‑changing power of Christ, and to be intentional in sharing it despite the discomfort it may bring. The class concluded with an invitation to upcoming spiritual growth events and a call to each member to discern and pursue their God‑given mission.

Luke 9:58

The foxes have holes and the birds of the sky have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.

Luke 9:59-60

And He said to another, "Follow Me." But he said, "Let me first go and bury my father." But Jesus said to him, "Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go and proclaim the kingdom of God."

Luke 9:62

And another also said, "I will follow You, Lord; but first let me say goodbye to those at my home." But Jesus said to him, "No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God."
