Stand Firm_ Holding the Sword of Faith

Lesson 48 of 51 December 16, 2024

The class opened with a reading of Ephesians 6:10‑18, highlighting Paul’s instruction to put on the whole armor of God so believers could stand firm against the devil’s tactics. The teacher noted that the phrase “stand firm” appears three times (verses 11, 13, 14) and explained that the devil’s methods—lust of the flesh, eyes, and pride—are described in 1 John 2:16. By comparing these methods to the temptations of Jesus in Matthew 4, the lesson showed how Satan seeks to drive a wedge between humanity and God. The discussion then shifted to practical application, addressing modern hardships such as geopolitical unrest and cultural shifts that test the Christian’s resolve. The instructor emphasized the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, as the primary weapon, and encouraged the congregation to strengthen it through study and prayer. Drawing on Galatians 6:1‑2, the class reminded believers to love, encourage, and bear one another’s burdens, fulfilling the law of Christ. The session concluded with a call to stand together, support one another, and rely on God’s strength to endure the present evil day.

Ephesians 6:10-18

Finally be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil... take up the whole armor of God that you may be able to withstand in the evil day... having done so to stand firm... take up the shield of faith... the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

Ephesians 6:17

And take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish the flaming darts of the evil one.
