Knowing the Death of Jesus

Lesson 5 of 11 November 12, 2023

The class examined the events of Jesus’ prayer in Gethsemane, focusing on Matthew 26:36‑44 where He expressed deep grief, asked the Father to remove the cup if possible, yet submitted to divine will. The teacher highlighted the humanity of Christ and the repeated failure of the disciples—Peter, James, and John—to stay awake, illustrating the frailty of even Jesus’ closest followers. References to John 18:12 and Luke 22:40 were used to connect the garden scene with the impending arrest and the broader biblical call to watch and pray. The discussion explored why Jesus selected these three apostles to accompany Him deeper into the garden, suggesting purposes such as providing comfort, modeling prayer, and preparing them for future trials. Participants reflected on personal applications, considering how their own spiritual vigilance often mirrors the disciples’ sleepiness, and how they can align their desires with God’s will. The session concluded with practical reminders about upcoming church events and the importance of training teachers within the congregation. Overall, the lesson reinforced the profound mystery of Christ’s voluntary sacrifice, inviting listeners to embrace both His divine purpose and His relatable humanity as they walk in faith.

Matthew 26:36-44

Then Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane. And he said to the disciples, Sit here, while I go over there and pray. And he took with him Peter and the two sons of Zebedee, and began to be sorrowful and troubled. Then he said to them, My soul is very sorrowful, even to death; stay here, and keep watch with me. And going a little farther, he fell on his face and prayed, saying, My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will. And he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, and said to Peter, What, could you not watch with me one hour? Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak. Again, for the second time he went away and prayed, saying, My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done. And again he came and found them sleeping, for they could not keep their eyes open. And he left them again and went away and prayed a third time, saying the same words again. Then he came to the disciples and said to them, Sleep and rest now; for the time is near, and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. Get up, let us be going; behold, he who betrays me is at hand.
