Building a Bridge - Sunday Morning Sermon

Lesson 4 of 9 February 7, 2019

In this Sunday morning sermon, Richard Sutton began by describing several infamous bridges around the world, using their danger and height as a vivid illustration of the fears Christians often encounter when faced with the task of evangelism. He then shifted focus to what he called the "evangelophobia bridge," the spiritual bridge created by Jesus' Great Commission (Mark 16:15; Matthew 28:18‑20). Sutton explained that many believers view evangelism as a daunting, high‑risk endeavor reserved for the especially gifted or bold, and he identified common anxieties such as fear of failure, rejection, and the overwhelming responsibility of eternal destinies. Sutton argued that these fears are not excuses but barriers that can be overcome by remembering Christ’s command to love Him and keep His commandments (John 14:16) and by relying on the Holy Spirit rather than personal talent. He challenged the congregation to see evangelism as a necessary part of their discipleship, encouraging each member to step onto the bridge of sharing the gospel with courage and faithfulness, trusting that God equips all who are called.

Mark 16:15

Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved. He that disbelieves shall be condemned.

Matthew 28:18-20

And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, 'All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,'
