Don't Get Lost in the Suit - Sunday morning sermon

Lesson 3 of 10 January 20, 2020

Pastor Richard Sutton delivered a sermon that centered on the congregation’s need to grasp their divine identity and avoid being defined by external roles. He introduced the year’s theme—Identity—and highlighted 2 Peter 1:1‑11 as the foundational passage, emphasizing the call to put on the new self created in the likeness of God. He connected this biblical truth to the uniqueness of each individual, using the metaphor of fingerprints and the story of the San Diego Chicken mascot to illustrate how people can become lost when their identity is tied to a single ‘suit.’ Sutton also referenced Genesis 2:7 to remind listeners that they bear the breath of God, making them precious and uniquely designed. He warned that professional athletes, child stars, and even mascots often struggle when their public persona fades, leading them to question who they truly are. The sermon urged believers to anchor their self‑understanding in the divine qualities listed in 2 Peter, to walk in righteousness and holiness, and to let their God‑given identity empower them to make a difference in their immediate world. The message concluded with a heartfelt appeal for the class to pray for upcoming missionary work in Cameroon and to actively live out their true nature, knowing they are created in God’s image and called to reflect His character in everyday life.

Ephesians 4:17-24

Now this I say and testify in the Lord that you must no longer walk as the Gentiles do in the futility of their minds. They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them due to the hardness of the heart. They have become callous and have given themselves up to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity. But that is not the way you learned Christ, assuming that you learned about him and were taught in him as the truth is in Jesus, to put off your old self which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds and to put on a new self, created out the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness.
