Lord Most High

Lesson 6 of 38 February 27, 2023

Clint Davison opened this class by addressing the pervasive problem of bullying in modern culture, from schoolyard harassment to social media intimidation, noting that even a three-year-old had experienced such severe bullying he contemplated suicide. He observed that life itself sometimes feels like a bully, intimidating and coercing us when we stand up for truth. However, Davison reminded the class that Christians possess an incredible asset: God Himself, the Lord Most High, who has promised to stand beside us and bear our burdens. Davison then pivoted to address alarming CDC statistics showing that 57% of teenage girls report feeling persistently sad or hopeless, with unprecedented levels of stress-related illness and anxiety affecting both teens and adults over the past decade. Against this cultural backdrop of despair, he emphasized the critical importance of remembering and praising the Lord Most High. The teacher then explored the biblical name "El Elyon" (God Most High), explaining that this name appears 28 times in Scripture and means that there is nothing higher than God—no idol, no other god, no created thing surpasses Him. Though "El Elyon" was a common term in Canaanite culture, Scripture uniquely identifies Yahweh as El Elyon, explicitly declaring that Jehovah God stands above all other gods and all created things. Davison traced the first biblical usage of this name to Genesis 14:18-20, where Melchizedek, the mysterious priest-king of Salem, blessed Abram and identified himself as a priest to El Elyon. This connection emphasized that we serve the same God who created everything, parted the Red Sea, and demonstrated His power throughout history.

Psalm 57:2

I call to God most high, to God who fulfills his purpose for me.
