Why we didn't evolve and why it matters - Eric Lyons

Lesson 9 of 21 October 16, 2021

Eric Lyons presented a comprehensive argument for why evolution fails as an explanation for human existence and why this question matters profoundly for our faith and purpose. He began by establishing that the most fundamental question any person can ask is "Why am I here?" referencing Solomon's philosophical inquiry in Ecclesiastes, where the preacher concludes that without acknowledging a Creator, all of life is vanity and meaningless. Lyons then addressed the logical problem at the heart of evolutionary and atheistic worldviews: the origin of matter itself. Using the law of cause and effect—that every material effect must have an adequate antecedent cause—he demonstrated that something cannot come from nothing. He cited prominent atheists and scientists like Dan Barker and Stephen Hawking, who claim the universe spontaneously created itself from nothing, and pointed out the logical contradiction inherent in such statements. Lyons emphasized that matter and energy cannot be created or destroyed according to natural law, yet evolutionists ask us to believe the entire universe appeared from nothing billions of years ago. He referenced a New Scientist article by David Shiga that ultimately acknowledged the impossibility of explaining ultimate origins without addressing the deeper question: "Why is there anything at all instead of nothing?" Lyons concluded that this is not merely an academic debate but a spiritual battle for the souls of young people in schools and universities who are made to feel foolish for believing in biblical creation.

Ecclesiastes 1:2

Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher; vanity of vanities; all is vanity.

Ecclesiastes 12:1

Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, before the days of trouble come, and the years approach, of which thou shalt say: I have no pleasure in them.
