The Son and the Father are One - Gary Massey

Lesson 4 of 13 October 18, 2025

Gary Massey taught an in-depth study on John 5:19, focusing on the profound unity and equality between God the Father and Jesus Christ the Son. The class began with the historical context of John 5, explaining the healing at the Pool of Bethesda and why the Jewish leaders accused Jesus of breaking the Sabbath and blaspheming by claiming equality with God. Massey emphasized that when first-century Jews heard "Son of God," they understood it to mean equality with God in substance, status, and power—not merely a figurative relationship. The teacher explored how the Gospel of John repeatedly addresses the central question: Who is Jesus? Drawing from John 1:1-3 and John 1:14, Massey highlighted that Jesus was with God in the beginning, is God, and through Him all things were created. Yet paradoxically, Jesus demonstrated complete submission to the Father's will and work, as stated in John 5:19: "The Son can do nothing of Himself unless it is something He sees the Father doing." This apparent tension—Jesus being fully God yet in submission to the Father—reflects the nature of the Trinity: the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit operating separately yet in perfect unity and hierarchy. Massey concluded by previewing John 17, where Jesus prays that believers would share in the same oneness that He and the Father possess. The ultimate application is that Christ invites us into genuine unity with God and with one another, not through our own power, but through participation in the Father's will and work.

John 5:19

Therefore Jesus answered and was saying to them, Truly, truly, I really appreciate Brother Dan's insight from last night and it really gave me a deeper appreciation for the double-edged sword. The double amen, the truly, truly. And the way I've started hearing it just since last night is, believe, believe, right? I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself unless it is something He sees the Father doing. For whatever the Father does, these things the Son also does in like manner.

John 5:17

Jesus answered them, My Father is working until now, and I Myself am working.
