Give God Thy Heart

Lesson 48 of 49 December 19, 2022

Richard Sutton taught that the gospel of Jesus Christ is the transformative message the world desperately needs to address the emptiness, pain, and directionlessness caused by sin. He began with a humorous anecdote about a game show contestant to illustrate how people often make decisions without real understanding, then pivoted to the serious reality that life is filled with tragedy, loss, and suffering—all consequences of sin entering the world. Romans 3:23 and Romans 6:23 establish that all have sinned and the wages of sin is death, yet God offers eternal life in Christ Jesus as a free gift. Sutton explained that God has placed within every human being a God-shaped void that cannot be filled by power, fame, money, or sensuality—only by a relationship with God. Without God, people are directionless and restless, trying to navigate life without proper moral guidance, as evidenced by contemporary confusion about fundamental aspects of human identity and purpose. In contrast, Jesus came offering abundant life, peace, contentment, and satisfaction to all who trust in Him. The class connected this personal spiritual truth to ecclesiology, arguing that churches must understand the root of church growth: outward witness and evangelism. Churches that become inwardly focused and fail to carry the gospel message to the lost inevitably become "root bound"—stagnated, tangled, and unable to grow. History demonstrates that churches failing to be witnesses for Jesus eventually close their doors. Jesus' own mission exemplified this principle of sowing and reaching the lost, making evangelism central to the Christian faith and the health of the church.
