Mother's Day Sermon - Sunday May 10th

Lesson 23 of 50 May 10, 2020

In this Mother's Day sermon, Richard Sutton honored the vital role of mothers throughout Scripture and in our lives. The teacher opened with humorous anecdotes about mothers during quarantine, acknowledging the unique challenges they faced during the pandemic while emphasizing how much mothers are truly appreciated. Sutton traced the biblical heritage of motherhood, beginning with Eve as the mother of all living, then highlighting Sarah (the promised mother), Leah (the forgotten mother), Jochebed (the sacrificial mother who placed Moses in a basket to save his life), Naomi (a spiritual mother to Ruth), and Mary (the mother of the Savior). He presented four compelling reasons to honor mothers: first, their persistent love, illustrated powerfully by the story of Rizpah in 2 Samuel 21, who maintained a vigil over her sons' bodies day and night, protecting them from scavengers for an extended period. Second, mothers have tremendous impact on our lives, with Mary's influence on Jesus as a prime example. Sutton emphasized that while not all mothers are perfect—some abuse or abandon their children—most mothers are exceptional and deserve recognition. He called mothers mentors, adoptive mothers, and biological mothers to be celebrated for their enduring strength, patience, and grace that reflect the very heart of God from the garden to the cross.
