You will get through this

Lesson 5 of 15 May 13, 2020

Teacher John McCarthy presented the sixth lesson in a study of Joseph, focusing on the biblical framework that "you'll get through this" during hard times. He emphasized that while God's deliverance may not be painless or quick, He will use difficult circumstances for good. McCarthy highlighted Joseph's experience in Pharaoh's prison after being falsely accused by Potiphar's wife. After interpreting dreams for the chief cupbearer and baker, Joseph asked the cupbearer to remember him and secure his release—a request the cupbearer forgot for two full years. McCarthy traced Joseph's timeline: sold into slavery at age 17, he wasn't promoted to serve Pharaoh until age 30, meaning he spent over a decade in Egypt, including several years in prison. The central theme explored why waiting is necessary in the Christian life. McCarthy explained that God operates outside of time and has a different perspective on duration than humans do. He referenced 2 Peter 3:8, which states that to God one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day. McCarthy also emphasized that God knows the right time for His interventions, citing Romans 5:6 and Galatians 4:4 regarding Christ's perfect timing. He noted that in our contemporary era of instant gratification and impatience—exemplified by the pandemic's uncertain duration—understanding divine timing becomes increasingly important. The lesson encourages believers to trust God's sovereignty while waiting, accepting that delays serve purposes we may not immediately understand.
